Bullying Victims among Early Adolescence: A Study of Incidence, Risk Factor, and Coping Strategy

Bullying in adolescents can negatively impact various aspects of life, especially if left with maladaptive coping. However, several studies have explored the phenomenon, characteristics, and coping strategies among adolescent victims of bullying in Indonesia has variation. This study aims to determine the incidence, risk factors, and coping strategies used among early adolescent victims of bullying. This study uses a cross-sectional design with a retrospective approach to 55 junior high school students in three schools from 7 to 27 September 2021 in Wes Java, Indonesia. The tool used the Victim Questionnaire Instrument and Adolescent-Coping Orientation for Problem Experiences. The findings of this study were from 55 early adolescents who reported experiencing bullying, the majority from two public schools (85.5%), aged 14 years (74.5%), female (72.7%) and living with both parents (85.5%). Overall, early adolescent victims of bullying use problem-focused coping (65.5%), emotion-focused coping (30.9%), and both (3.6%). Our finding highlights early adolescent victims of bullying used a coping strategies include problem-focused coping and emotion-focused coping. This study suggested that the school nurse's as an educator collaborate with the school in carrying out interventions for bullying victims, such as counselling and screening. Further investigation of the interactions among risk factors is urgently needed to prevent bullying among early adolescents.
