Background: People undergoing hemodialysis may impact on physical or psychological patients. Feelings of happiness affect the immune system in the body, fight stress, improve sleep comfort and creativity. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of group-based hope intervention on the happiness of patients with end-stage renal disease undergoing hemodialysis. Methods: Quasi experimental research design was used in this study and involved a total of 40 patients in the control group and 40 patients in the intervention group, who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The samples were recruited randomly using paper containing odd and even numbers. The inclusion criteria were end stage renal disease patients undergoing routine hemodialysis twice a week for ≥3 months, aged ≥18th and ≤65th years old, graduating from junior high school, and patients who are participants of the National Health Insurance. The exclusion criteria were patients with hospitalization and experience decreased consciousness. Hope intervention is given 2 times a week for 4 weeks with a duration of 30-45 minutes each meeting in the group consisting of 8-12 patients. The control group was given standard hospital intervention with consultation. Data were collected using the Oxford Happiness Questionnaire. Data analysis used the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test and the Mann Whitney Test. Results: The results showed that after the intervention, the mean level of happiness in the intervention group increased from 2.93±0.888 to 4.10±0.709, and in the control group, the mean increased from 3.25±0.707 to 3.25±0.707. After the implementation of hope intervention and peer support, there was a significant difference in the level of happiness between the intervention group and the control group (p<0.001). Conclusion: The increase in happiness in end-stage kidney disease patients undergoing hemodialysis was due to increased expectations and support from peers in the group.References
